Expert Review: Abacus Brands’ Bill Nye’s Xtreme Weather Lab VR
Brave the Storm with Bill Nye in this VR Experience Set
- A fun fact that doesn’t need to be a full sentence or punctuated
- Features a 40-page guidebook with information and experiments
- Puts kids in the middle of natural disasters using VR
WHAT IT IS
Designed for kids ages 8 and up, Bill Nye’s Xtreme Weather VR is a fun way to learn about natural disasters and how they work. There are three components to the learning adventure, learning about natural disasters using the included guidebook, conducting experiments using the included supplies and charts, and experiencing natural disasters in virtual reality (VR)! To access the VR components of the set, kids need to download the Bill Nye’s VR Science Squad app onto a phone or similar device. Then, using the activation code inside the guidebook, kids can unlock the Xtreme Weather VR segment. Kids can either slip the phone into the include VR headset to experience thunderstorms, avalanches, and other disasters in virtual reality, or use full screen mode to share the experience with friends.
WHY WE LOVE IT
Kids can often feel disconnected when they are learning about natural disasters. Sometimes, you need to see them with your own eyes to believe the magnitude of them. With this VR kit, kids are put into the middle of these disasters and can experience them safely. The included experiments also give kids hands-on learning about air pressure, wind speed, temperature, and more.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW
Kids may get nauseous using VR, especially if they’ve never used it before. If kids are prone to getting sick, they can use the alternative setting, which puts the VR scenes in 360 mode, so that kids can explore them by moving the phone around.
PERFECT FOR
Future meteorologists; preteens; science kids.
